Engine Room

One of two Fairbanks-Morse opposed Piston main drive 1800 horsepower engines. These engines were air-started and reversible and drove through a hydraulic clutch. Some LSMs had GM main drives, 16-278's (16 cylinder, 278 cu. inch per cylinder). The GM engines had non-reversing "air clutch" drives. All LSMs had twin screws, with engines governed providing 1440 HP for 720 RPM.
